Belwood is a Pre-School-5th grade public school in Calhoun, Georgia and is part of the Gordon County School system. BES has approximately 530 students and 75 staff members.  

Belwood has a tradition steeped in academic excellence and serving others, dating back to its founding in 1929 when Blackwood, Belmont, Watsonville, and Union Grove schools were consolidated into a new Belwood School.  From that time, Belwood students and parents have worked to serve the surrounding community and prepare its students for success in school and in life. Belwood continues to uphold these values as we work to meet the needs of our students and our community.

For many Gordon County families, attending Belwood Elementary School is a family tradition. Numerous current BES students are second, third, and sometimes even four generation Belwood students. Pictured below, fourth generation student Hollis Fox proudly displays the 1951 Belwood yearbook dedicated to his great-great uncle Jesse Fox who returned to teach at Belwood after graduating from the University of Georgia. As a student, Jesse Fox helped lead the Belwood High School basketball team to several undefeated seasons and was recruited to play basketball for UGA. Also pictured below are multi generation Belwood students. Drake Wyatt (not pictured), is the great, great grandson of Frank John Richardson who donated a lot of the land for Belwood School.

The faculty and staff of Belwood Elementary School is committed to a high standard of academic excellence. Student achievement and high expectations coupled with strong relationships with students and stakeholders have been Belwood’s winning combination for over ninety years. Belwood teachers make an impact that lasts a lifetime. Pictured below are Ms. Alice Roberson, retired teacher and current aftercare worker. Ms. Roberson has worked at Belwood for 54 years. Mrs. Candi Gresham, 5th grade reading teacher and Mrs. Taryn Osterhout, 3rd grade math teacher. 

The mission of Belwood Elementary School is to Build Exceptional Students. To accomplish this task, all staff works together to develop the whole child. At BES, we believe that a child’s character, behavior, creativity, and social–emotional development is equally as important as the child’s academic development. We seek to prepare our students to be well rounded and well equipped for a successful life
